INTRODUCTION:

Most Christian school teachers quite naturally incorporate the pro-life message into their teaching because it is only with our Judeo-Christian heritage that we have worth applied to each and every human life. Sanctity of human life and reverence of human life take on their fullest meaning in the life of Christ. Because of the situation in our country today, however, it becomes necessary to clearly and concisely teach our children respect for all human life.

Pro-life concepts are most easily incorporated into the Bible and science curriculums. The story of Moses, for example, is a perfect time to share God's love and protection for babies. Mary's visit to Martha brought joy to Martha's preborn son. The Christmas story is a pro-life story. How God must love babies because He let His own Son be a baby. How He protected Jesus and Mary and Joseph. Scripture contains many references to children being a blessing from the Lord and also warns against shedding innocent blood.

Science, health and safety units also provide opportunity to share pro-life concepts. How God made you and gave you to your parents. He formed you and knew you before birth (all supported by scripture). He protects preborn babies by placing them in a safe environment until they are big enough to be born.

Activity Ideas: As a teacher you will have many ideas - these are just to help you get started:

  1. Have a grandparents day and invite a grandparent to visit the class.

  2. Have a baby day and have babies of different ages to show continuity of development.

  3. Have students share little brothers and sisters.  Show different stages of development.

  4. Visit a convalescent home and adopt a grandparent.

  5. Have a pregnant mother, baby, child, teen, parent, grandparent visit the class to show how growth is planned by our Creator.

  6. Have a capable person with a handicap share his disability with the class.

  7. Have students try riding a wheel chair, using crutches, walking blindfolded etc.

  8. Visit a hospital or invite a doctor or nurse to class to share life-saving techniques and first aid. Discuss the importance of each and every life.

  9. Display the fetal models of preborn life such as the “Precious One” and have "Precious Feet" pins available and prenatal charts and handouts.

  10. Have the children see a sonogram of a developing baby and hear the heart beat.

Good Resources For Children From Heritage House

*The “Precious One” is perfect for all ages. www.hh76.com

Heritage House has a variety of 10-12 week old baby models but we recommend the Precious One. It is very realistic and soft to the touch.

*The “precious feet” lapel pin is an excellent pro-life resource but could be a choking hazard for very young children. www.hh76.com

Both the #100 GIL (gold) and the #100SIL (silver) are reasonably priced and very impactful.

BULLETIN BOARD IDEAS:

  1. GOD LOVES US ALL - Pictures of all kinds of people at different ages from prenatal, pregnant women through the elderly and handicapped.  Place at random. Glue a mirror on low enough for the child to include himself.

  2. GROWING, GROWING, GROWING (enlarge letters on each word) - same as above only age levels are chronologically arranged.  Add a sign over the mirror: "Growing In The Lord, Too!"

  3. GROWTH CHART - Measure heights in the fall and in the spring. God loves us as we grow.

  4. CHILDREN ARE A HERITAGE OF THE LORD - Put up each student's picture.

  5. JESUS LOVES THE LITTLE CHILDREN - Have a bulletin board to go with the song.

  6. CHILD OF THE WEEK - Each child brings in pictures of himself at various ages to put on a board and he is the star of the week. Include favorite scripture.

  7. GOD LOVES BABIES - Put baby Jesus picture in the middle; surround with baby pictures.

  8. MYSTERY BABY - Secretly have a child bring a baby picture to hang up. Guess who? Or have every child bring in a baby picture and current picture so the class can guess who belongs to each picture.

  9. CHANGES - Have baby items on one side strung to corresponding grown-up items.

  10. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY JESUS - Make a birthday party bulletin board with Jesus at the center. Have a party!

The most important thing a teacher can do is consciously think pro-life when planning her lessons and when standing before the class. The children quite naturally receive the pro-life message because they feel the rightness of it. It is a message that should flow naturally from the heart; preaching and negativism will not touch children's hearts. Each child you teach was once a precious babe in the womb.  We all need to remember that!
